An increase in internet use and higher levels of education contributed to a rise in cybercrime in Belarus last year.
Belerusian computer criminals caused about $400,000 (E450,000) in damage to foreign institutions last year, mostly banks, high tech crimes investigators found. Hackers targeted only a few domestic banks.
The country's High Technology Crimes Investigation Department started 429 legal proceedings against hackers and the FBI twice visited the country to get information for its own investigations.
As the number of Belerusians attending university rises, so does the number of cybercriminals. Officials at the Ministry of Internal Affairs estmiate 80 per cent of the 189 hackers known in the country are students.
