Belarus Mobile Users, April 01, 20102005: 4 mln. mobile subscribers in Belarus

In his interview to BELTA, Belarusian Minister of Communications Vladimir Goncharenko predicts that there will be 4 mln. mobile users in Belarus by the end of 2005.
According to Mr. Goncharenko, the government ordered to Velcom and MTS (Belarusian GSM operators) to increase the number of subscribers by 1 mln each. By the end of the year.
At present Velcom has 1mln. 330 thousand subscribers, and MTS - 1 mln. 450 thousand.
Mr. Goncharenko informed that the third GSM operator BeST, which is state owned, will pursue dumping tariff policies.
According to Ministry of Communications assessments, the overall GSM market capacity totals 5,5 mln. subscribers. The Minister stressed that mobile network extension will exceed fixed telephone lines extension by the end of the year.
