According to Deputy Minister of Comminications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus Nikolai Strukov broadband market capacity, including WiMAX and UMTS services, totals 0,5 mln subscribers. Mr. Strukov has informed that at present MTS and Velcom are testing new equipment. Two operators are planning to launch pilot It is planned to create 3G services in order to demonstrate opportunities provided by UMTS standard and to test the demand for them.
Mr. Strukov emphasized that there are no obstacles for allocating frequencies for 3G services in Belarus. However, it is necessary to settle issues of electromagnetic compatibility and licensing issues.
Vladimir Karpovich, MTS general director, says that permission to use frequencies is the most important issue for mobile operators.
