Belarusian mobile phone operator Velcom (Mobile Digital Communications) has announced that it signed an agreement with Ericsson. According to the agreement, Ericsson will supply and install equipment worth U.S. $44 million by the end of 2006. The equipment will allow increasing Velcom's network capacity up to 3 million users. Furthermore, Belarusian mobile operator will be able to provide new services to its clients.
As of January 2006, Velcom had 1.885 million subscribers in Belarus.
Velcom, founded in August 1998, is owned by Cyprian company SB Telecom (49% of shares), Belarusian state-owned company Beltelecom (31% o of shares) and Belarusian arms and weapons exporter Beltekhexport (20% of shares)
