Mobile Digital Communications (Velcom and Privet trademarks) has launched a pilot 3G UMTS/WCDMA network in Mogilev using Siemens equipment.
The new pilot service launched in the beginning of May is free of charge for subscribers up to July, 30. It is expected that 3 thousand clients will use the service during the testing period.
In March-August, 2006, Velcom tested UMTS equipment (provided by Siemens) in Minsk. 2 thousand Velcom subscribers used the service during the 5 months testing period.
It is expected that an expert interdepartmental group created by the State Committee on radio Frequencies will allocate frequencies for the 3G service, and, possibly, will announce bidding for 3G licences by the end of summer 2007.
