According to Telegeography he weakening of the Belarusian ruble has reportedly forced a number of domestic mobile operators to raise their call rates, writes local news service BelaPAN.
MTS Belarus, 51%-owned by the government with the remainder held by Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) of Russia, has already increased call and short message service rates by between 15 and 30 rubles and other operators could now follow suit. The increases are being blamed on the sharp depreciation of the ruble earlier this month; MTS Belarus has to pay for a significant proportion of its new equipment and for many services in foreign currency - and is struggling to do so as the currency fluctuates.
