According to TeleGeography Telekom Austria Group yesterday announced that its Belarusian mobile subsidiary Mobile Digital Communications (Velcom) has been granted a countrywide UMTS license for a purchase price of EUR9.5 million (USD13.2 million).
TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database notes that Velcom's 3G frequencies were formally awarded in late 2009. It hopes to have launched the UMTS network commercially no later than 31 December 2010 and has selected Nokia Siemens Network to supply its 3G equipment. The rollout of the UMTS network is fully in-train, with up to ten base stations being upgraded to 3G a day, the parent company added.
