According to TeleGeography Belarusian mobile operator Belarusian Telecommunications Network (BeST) has been granted permission by the State Commission on Radio Frequencies to conduct trials of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. In a press release the operator, which is 80%-owned by Turkcell and offers services under the banner life:), confirmed it has been 'assigned one radiofrequency channel : to make tests and provide a corresponding report by 1 May 2011'.
In March this year BeST revealed it had signed up more than 200,000 3G mobile users and that it was aiming to increase this to 500,000 by the end of the year. Of the total, between 90,000 and 95,000 subscribers were classed as subscribing to plans which include mobile internet, while the remainder were using 3G services on an ad hoc basis. BeST is looking to secure a roughly 70% market share of the UMTS segment.
