Number of mobile phones in Belarus tops 10,45 million

Belarusian cell phone userbase was estimated to be around 10,45 million as of the beginning of July 2011, said Pavel Petrulevich, deputy head of telecommunications Department of the Ministry of communications and informatisation. At the same time, the increase of subscribers has slowered due to the summer holidays season.
At the end of 2010, Belarusian cell phone userbase was estimated to be 10,3 million, while at the beginning of the year it was 9,686 million. In 2000, there were 5 cell phones per 1 thousand people, in 2005 - 420, and in 2010 - 1022 .
In July 2011, Austrian company Kapsch has won the tender and has supplied the equipment required to set up the central station to enable wireless number portability in Belarus.
