According to TeleGeography the transition to digital broadcasting in Belarus is running into difficulties.
According to AKTR and Naviny, the problems stem from the high cost of reception equipment, with digital set-top boxes typically costing around BYR450,000-600,000 (ˆ39- 52) each.
As a result, only 20,000 were sold in the first 11 months of this year.
Belarus is due to complete the transition to digital broadcasting in 2015 and at present a single multiplex carrying eight channels reaches 94.45% of the population.
The sale of TV sets without DTT tuners will be banned from 2013.
