Beltelecom picks Huawei for commercial 100G WDM rollout; launches VoD

14/04/2012

According to TeleGeography Belarusian state-owned fixed line and broadband operator Beltelecom has selected Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei Technologies to deploy the commercial 100G WDM network in the country.

The new WDM network will employ so-called ‘optical coherent detection’ technology and will span 1,200km, transiting Belarus via a link from Grodno (Polish border) to Vitebsk (Russian border). Last November TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported that Huawei launched a trial of 100G transmission services on Beltelecom’s live WDM national backbone network over the Grodno-Vitebsk route. During the trial, 100G services were transmitted concurrently with 10G and 40G services over the same fibre, achieving non-regeneration transmission over a distance of 900km, it said. Huawei used enhanced Polarisation Division Multiplexing Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (ePDM-QPSK) modulation for the live 100G long-haul transmission test. The technology will now be employed in the commercial launch, providing capacity of up to 8Tbps, it said.

In a separate announcement, Beltelecom has reportedly launched a new range of services for its byfly broadband subscribers, under the banner ‘Videoportal’. Telecompaper writes that the new service includes online TV and video-on-demand (VoD). People signing up to the PTO’s ‘Video-Unlim’ tariff plan will enjoy unlimited access to a wide catalogue of films for BYR30,000 (USD3.69) per month, while a VoD package costs from BYR3,600 per film, and access to a suite of 20 online TV channels costs BYR15,000 per month.
