According to BelTA The Belarusian company Onliner, the owner of the same-name Belarusian electronic commerce platform, has bought the domain name online.by at a charity auction for Br100 million (about $8,700), BelTA learned from Mr Sergei Povalishev, head of Hoster.by, the organizer of domain name auctions.
The company has already transferred the money for the domain name, which is similar to that of the portal itself. The money has been transferred to accounts of five children’s homes. The purchase is one of the most expensive registrations of a domain name in the .BY zone. The domain name casino.by was sold for over Br250 million earlier.
Sergei Povalishev said that bidding for the domain name online.by had been very intense from the very start. Within a couple of days the price soared to $2,000.
According to new rules, domain names, which registration has expired, are put up for a charity auction. The owner of the domain name is granted 30 days to prolong the registration. If the owner fails to do so, the domain name is sold via an auction.
So far five charity auctions to sell domain names in the Belarusian domain .BY have been held, with about Br750 million earned and transferred to accounts of Belarusian children’s homes.
