According to Lexology Belarus bucked the recent trend in Europe by adopting a new data retention rule.
Under a Decree issued by President Lukashenko in December 2014 and an order issued by the Ministry of Communications and Information in February, telecommunications and Internet service providers must retain certain user information for one year and turn it over to the authorities upon request. The retention rule goes into effect on January 1, 2016. Lukashenko’s order also requires Internet companies to analyze the content of traffic and block any content “aimed at drug trafficking.”
