According to BelTA a balanced and responsible attitude to media content is the best way to challenge fake news, Oleg Makarov, the director of the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies, said in an interview with the Belarus 1 TV channel on 17 February.
“There is no ministry of truth, there is no absolute truth. I think that we can confront this threat [fake news] by providing balanced and responsible content, by using credible and professional sources of information to analyze events and developments. Thus we will raise public awareness of the things that are happening, without imposing one opinion for all,” Oleg Makarov noted. As it was reported, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed Decree No. 49 to set up the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies on 12 February. The research institute will focus on research, international development trends, socio-political and socio-economic processes, risks and challenges in information sector. The institute will develop recommendations to improve state policies in various fields, will assist in the harmonization of the strategic planning documents (doctrines, strategies, concepts) developed by state authorities.
