At the press-conference given by Deputy Minister of Communications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus Ivan Rak and by Beltelecom director Nikolai Krukovski on March 17, it was stated that mobile operators services prices reduction is expected in the third quarter of 2005.
According to Mr. Rak that will happen after the third GSM operator BeST enters the market in autumn 2005. Deputy Minister of Communications and Informatization said that BeST would have to seek for foreign loans on a security of government. BeST is planning to build its own base stations as well as to rent other mobile operators base stations.
According to the license terms, a new GSM operator should work out special prices for the needy and should cover remote rural areas by its network; in 2-3 years BeST network should cover all the highways of the country. It is expected that in 3-4 years BeST network will cover country's territory inhabited by 90% of population.
As of March 1, 2005 the number of GSM services subscribers totals 2 mln. 545 thousand. The leading GSM operator, MTS, has 1mln. 320 thousand subscribers with 50 thousand subscribed in February this year. While Velcom has 1 million 225 thousand subscribers with 45 thousand subscribed in February
